Demilitarize
South Asian Studies
In
Autumn 2003 I included these words in a
confidential message to my colleagues:
"In
my view, the future of South Asian Studies lies in
local organization, grass roots collegial networks,
rather than the obsolete "Manhattan Project"
approach taken by W. Norman Brown, et. al. I feel
it would be a serious mistake to attempt to
replicate this obsolete model with money from the
South Asian American community, which too often
leads to misunderstanding and hard feelings. I hope
South Asian Studies is not remilitarized to serve a
government agenda."
This
remains my position.

Kumbh
Mela (Movie)
August
20-22, 8pm
Webster
University Film Series
Maurizio
Benazzo & Nick Day, UK, 2004 86 min. Held for
two millennia,
The Kumbh Mela (Great Nectar Fair) is a spiritual
festival organized
every twelve years near the Indian town of
Allahabad. The biggest
gathering of people in the history of humanity, the
festival draws more
than 70 million pilgrims from all over India and
around the world: gurus,
spiritual leaders and their devotees, and ascetic
sadhus who emerge
from their solitary forest retreats and mountain
caves. On certain
auspicious days everyone takes a holy dip at the
confluence of two
actual rivers - the Ganges and Yamuna - and a
mythical river, the
Saraswati, a ritual believed to guarantee release
from the cycle of
rebirth - iterally a short cut to the state of
purest bliss...nirvana. In
Hindi & English with English
subtitles.
