Fantasy and Science Fiction Club Minutes
12/7/03
I. Attendance: Eight people attended the meeting in the Koenig House Lounge (Jerome, Sarah, Peter, Rachel, Ashley, Craig, Hubert, and Paul). The group included two founding members of the Science Fiction Club (about one month older than the Fantasy and Science Fiction Club), along with founding members of the Fantasy and Science Fiction Club, and two new members. A short business meeting was followed by an enthusiastic discussion of mutual interests. The meeting concluded with a showing of "The Fellowship of the Ring" with actors' commentary. Orange juice, Fitz's root beer and soda, and cookies and crackers were served.
II. Items discussed:
A. Member-Sharing: the two clubs definitely agreed to share members, and seem to have agreed on a de facto merger, with the older club specializing in science fiction and the newer club specializing in fantasy and Tolkien. This gives us about 15 active members already, give or take a few.
B. Script-Writing: members of the older club (Craig and Peter) asked if anyone was interested in writing a script for presentation at ARCHON (this is one of the goals of the Science Fiction Club). Sarah expressed interest, saying she had done this before, although it can be tricky.
C. Rides to Meetings: attendees expressed willingness to pick up non-driving club members, and pointed out that the Resident Assistants have a van for this purpose.
D. Bigger TV Lounge: we agreed that the Koenig Lounge is a little small for meetings much larger than eight people.
E. Meeting Schedule: we agreed to meet on Sundays at 7pm (the usual meeting time for the older club), and also at 7pm on Saturday (a better time for most people). The Sunday meetings will consist of 45 minutes of a TV series (currently Stargate SG1), followed by short discussion. Saturday meetings will alternate between fantasy, science fiction, Tolkien, and a movie night, for which we will need to reserve a larger room, perhaps Friedman Lounge or Brown 118 or 100. We agreed to keep our meetings on the South 40 if possible, for convenience.
F. Fund-Raising: it was noted that we have no money, and should plan a fundraiser. Some ideas were discussed.
G. Role-Playing: we agreed that expanding our club to include role-playing games would not be a good idea at this time. However, we could include Anime, in collaboration with the two Anime clubs on campus.
H. The Student Life Article: Jerome agreed to compile the response, based on the discussion of this meeting, and the next one, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11.
I. Star Fleet Uniforms: we agreed to disagree on this!
