WashU Fantasy and Science Fiction Club Minutes
12/4/03
I. Attendance: Three people attended the meeting (Jerome, Sarah, and Peter). Sarah has a friend who could not make it but wants to be a member. Peter came as a representative of a small, informal Science Fiction Club which grew out of last year's Freshman Seminar on "Science Fiction and Cultural Modernity." The participants enthusiastically discussed common interests, for two hours.
II. Items discussed:
A. Member-Sharing: both clubs agreed to share members (the "other club" has about 4-5 regular members, and about 2-3 less regular members; also a big email list). We agreed on a joint meeting this Sunday, December 7, from 7-10pm, to show "The Fellowship of the Ring" with actors' commentary, and to discuss joint projects and a joint agenda for next semester. The meeting will be in the Koenig House Lounge, with a big screen TV. If you do not have an ID card, just knock on the door (the one on the west side of the building, near the lounge) or rap on the window. There should be a call box outside which you could use to contact somebody inside. We will be expecting guests and will let you in for the meeting.
B. Website. Sarah volunteered to design our website, to be uploaded to a server to which she has access. When we get our ResTech website, her site will be maintained as a redirect page, as will this site.
C. Logo. Sarah and Peter had some ideas for a logo, but nothing definite. Suggestions are welcome.
D. Tabling. Sarah knows how to arrange a table in Mallinckrodt and volunteered to do so.
E. Resources:
1. It was proposed that we persuade the library to buy all the X-Files and Dr. Who on DVD.
2. Sarah has Red Dwarf tapes, Star Trek, Quantum Leap, Stargate (last 4 seasons), X-Files tapes (good quality).
3. Peter has Blade Runner and Fifth Element on DVD.
F. Discussion. Topics included: Harsh Realm, Terminator movies, original 3 Star Wars (not the new ones, not Jarjar!), the Red Green show, Red Dwarf, McGyver, Quantum Leap, Lone Gunmen, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet (and robots), Terry Gilliam films (Brazil, Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen), Black Hole, Back to the Future movies, Buckaroo Banzai and the Eighth Dimension, sf parodies (Dark Star, Galaxy Quest), the worst sf movies ever made (Plan 9 from Outer Space, Howard the Duck, Battlefield Earth, Jack's Back [1980s Jack the Ripper movie]), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones movies, Douglas Adams (BBC TV version of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy").
G. Refreshments at Meetings: preferences include orange juice and chocolate covered pretzels.
