WashU Fantasy and Science Fiction Club

Agenda for Thursday, Dec. 4 meeting (Eads 116, 8-9pm)

A. Proposal to share members with an unofficial WashU science fiction club already in existence, to increase our chances of getting SGAC recognition and funding. I append their email below:

It was brought to my attention that you are starting a Wash U Fantasy and Sci Fi Club. I understand that your goals include screening movies, inviting speakers and attending Archon. I was interested in knowing the number of members that your group has. Basically, I wanted to know if you wanted to share members. I am a member of the Science Fiction club on campus. Our group's founding purpose is to write a sci-fi script first semester and produce it second semester to take to the Archon convention. We currently meet weekly and watch Stargate episodes, eat food, and have discussions. As of yet, we do not have enough regular members to give us a shot at SU funding, the suggestion was brought up that we could share members so that both of us could get SU funding, and then we can co-sponsor events (similar to what the CLA and College Libertarians do to double their money). You could take Fantasy and we could take Sci-Fi, then it would be like having two meetings each week &endash; What Fun!

Thank you for your consideration,

Craig

B. Constitution. This is a draft, modeled on the sample provided by SGAC, drafted by Rose. See http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~jhbauer/tolkien_and_f%26sf.htm#washufantasyconstitution

C. Officers. I (Jerome) volunteer to serve as Secretary until someone else volunteers. I will maintain the email list, take minutes, and maintain a temporary website. Who wants to be President and Treasurer (these posts must be filled by WashU students)?

D. Schedule of events for next semester: can we make a tentative schedule of topics to be discussed next semester?

E. Logo. Does anybody have ideas for a logo, for our fliers and website?

F. Proposed T. A. Shippey lecture/discussion/reception, following a showing of "The Return of the King." I am working on this with the Council of the South 40 and the Liggett/Koenig dormitory (where I am Faculty Associate). This could be our first big event. Plans for this are well underway; this is tentatively scheduled for sometime in February. Perhaps a public lecture could be timed to coincide with a Wednesday evening session of "The Lord of the Rings" class (with consent of the instructor).

G. Rose proposes a December 17 or 18 group outing to see "The Return of the King." This will have to be an unofficial event, since student groups are not allowed to have events after Dec. 8.

H. Table to sign up members. Who knows how to arrange this?

I. A room on the South 40 for next semester's meetings. Who knows how to arrange this?

J. Any other item of interest to members.
